Basionym:
Bactris speciosa var. chichagui H.Karst.
Morphology:
Fruit globose to ovoid, yellow to red, smooth, 1.5-2.5 x 1-2 cm.
Distribution:
Disjunct between Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and the SW Amazon region in Peru, Brazil and Bolivia.
In Ecuador it is found only W of the Andes, in dry and moist forest.
Notes:
Considered the native form of the domesticated Bactris gasipaes var. gasipaes.

Fruits are edible and used for making drinks called “chicha” and “coladas” (mixed with green bananas), sold along road sides and on markets
