Morphology:
Medium sized, monoecious palms. Stem solitary, tall. Leaves palmate, induplicate; petiole with smooth margins. Inflorescence branched 2 times; each branch with a large sterile bract at the base. Flowers bisexual, with 2-4 nearly free sepals and an equal number of similar petals, 5-9 stamens, and 2-3 free carpels. Fruit small to medium sized, globose, corky-warted. Seedling leaves simple and bifid.
Distribution
and diversity: Three or four species in the Amazon basin and W Colombia, in the understorey of tropical moist and wet forest.
A single species has been recorded in Ecuador.
