Morphology:
Understorey palm. Stem solitary, erect or adscending, to 3(-5) m long, 2-3 cm in diameter. Leaf blade 30-70 cm long, with 2-20 segments on each side, often with 3-4 broad segments on each side, separated by empty space of 2-5 cm along the rachis. Inflorescence once branched, or sometimes the lower branches forked; peduncle 10-35 cm long, with a conspicuous white tomentum; branches 3-10, straight, spreading, 5-20 cm long and 4-6 mm in diameter; peduncular bract usually slender, inserted well above and overtopping the prophyll. Flower pits large, in loose spirals, 3-5 mm apart, usually with a distinct upper lip. Female flowers with staminodes united into a tube. Fruits 6-8 mm long.

Distribution:
Central America to Bolivia, along the Andes, at 1200-3100 m elevation.

Notes:
Two forms of this species occur in Ecuador: the first has few slender inflorescence branches that are straight in bud, and the peduncular bract inserted well above the prophyll and overtopping this; the second has more numerous, thicker inflorescence branches, curled in bud, and the peduncular bract enclosed in the prophyll and deciduous at anthesis.
